Mazy Day Farm, March 23, 2009

March 23, 2009

Today is the day the older chicks will be moved out to the hen/duck house. The ducks will have to stay with them until we get the goats barn built- which I hope is SOON! Or as soon as the weather and my back permit!
Right now we have 2 adult Nubian does, Seba and Mary. Seba kidded last week, and sadly we lost her baby which was a beautiful doe. However- we are milking her twice a day and we are getting around 3/4 of a gallon daily- and this will go up to probably 1 1/2 gallons a day. That's alot of milk! I will be learning how to make cheese, and soap from the milk- should be tons of fun!
We also have a 2 week old Boer Buck, he is so stout- built like the pit bull- but he is gorgeous, and will be a stunner as an adult. Then we have 2 Nubian doelings- Tinker is probably around 3 months old, and our little Bella is only a week or so. We are bottle feeding the 3 little one, ( I forgot- we also have a little Nubian buck- his name is Sugar Daddy-) and feeding them 4 times a day. This will pay off though because these 3 bottle babies should be sweet, and we can train/raise them as we wish.
I am actively searching for a livestock guard dog- I'm really hoping for a Great Pyreneese, but we'll have to see what comes our way.
Oh- and May is still laying eggs, almost 1 a day. Can't wait until the hens are laying eggs, then there will be enough to go around for everyone, (well, almost!)
More to arrive later
